MADISON NOW / Work in progress

presented by Phare Ponleu Selpak and the French Institute of Cambodia

March 1st and 2nd 2024, 7:30pm UTC +7 at John Crawford Theater, Canadian International School, Phnom Penh

Michael Laub and the Cambodian dancer-choreographer Vanthy Khen are collaborating on a new project attempting to merge the timeless elegance of Cambodia’s classical movements with the Madison dance. The latter originated in the US in the sixties, has featured through the years in films, notably Bande à part, and remains a popular dance form in Cambodia, which has a particular take on it. The original contemporary soundtrack is by Cambodia-based British musician/producer Mute Speaker.

Laub, who is noted for his interest in portraiture, will include biographical inserts of various cast members into the choreography. Madison Now's cast comprises professional and independent dancers, teachers, and students from the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh and Phare Ponleu Selpak, an NGO school dedicated to the arts in Battambang. The project will consist of the results of workshops held in Phnom Penh and Battambang.

After being officially confined (because of COVID), then self-confined (because of fear) in Brussels for two years, a contemporary director–choreographer on the decline is unable to produce his new staged piece. He was meant to be rehearsing with members of his company as well as local dancers in Mozambique, but production issues and travel restrictions have forced him to cancel, and his company is now defunct.
He returns to Cambodia where he worked before, notably on a Fassbinder movie about making a movie.
He records himself while traveling and auditioning expat and local talents for a hypothetical video project.
Although he wasn't planning to appear in the video, he decides to do so because the guy who was supposed to take the part dumped him. He recalls road movies from the ’70s, in which lonely guys chain-smoke and travel a lot, but don't seem to get anywhere end up talking to themselves into a tape recorder.
He documents his relationship to hypochondria, loneliness, music and dance with scenes improvised on the spot as well as orchestrated inserts, throwing in excerpts from his former works (which few people saw). Oscillating between reality and fiction, The Post Confinement Travelogue is a wry look at post-pandemic art.

ADAPTATIONS

A video retrospective remix & talk by Michael Laub

presented by ImPulsTanz

© Georg Hochmuth

© Georg Hochmuth, APA

ADAPTATIONS aims at tracing the director and choreographer's itinerary over the course of the last four decades. From live action to video, theater to choreography. Western literature to Bollywood, classical dance to trash aesthetics, from the accidential to the obsessively structured, from the screen to the stage and back again. In Michael Laub's multi-layered performances, adaptations from various media and epochs serve as catalyst for autonomous strands that are transferred into carefully orchestrated staged pieces. By collaborating with highly skilled artists as well as non-professionals, Laub is specifically known for crossfading his performer's reality with fiction. He has gained attention for his adaptations of portraiture to the stage, which make use of realism while also superimposing the spontaneous and the artificial.

supported by a cooperation of Freie Universität Berlin, MA Dance Studies at the department of Philosophy and Humanities / Institute for Theatre Studies at Freie Universität Berlin ( summer term 2020),
the German Academic Exchange Service ( DAAD) and Akademie der Künste Berlin.

ADAPTATIONS is paired with the launch of REWIND SONG, a book by Michael Laub co-published in cooperation with ImPulsTanz.

Michael Laub and Michael Stolhofer in conversation about Michael Laub's new book, REWIND SONG.

REWIND SONG is a retrospective remix of material derived from performances that were often mixed up in the first place. It reshuffles photography and texts in a non-chronological manner that is simultaneously slightly chaotic and orchestrated. The piece drifts thematically as well as geographically. The accumulation of scenes taken out of their original context suggests alternative perceptions not unlike debris of memory.
